FAQ’s – Social Media For Accountants

A lot of the time, when we talk about Social Media for Accountants, the first reaction is: “I don’t know if it works for Accounting practices”.

Without thinking too much about it – it kind of makes sense right? Accounting is a difficult area for a lot of people to understand, and there’s not a lot that’s really exciting about numbers and spreadsheets.

Frustrated thinking about Social Media for Accountants
Now I have to learn Social Media too?

We’ve found however, that this assumption couldn’t be further from the truth – so we thought we’d put together a FAQ/ Q&A around Social Media for Accountants.

Q1) What do I post about? Or in other words – what do I have to say that people would be interested in?

A1) PLENTY! Often the only reason you think you don’t have much anything interesting to say on Social Media is because you’re thinking about the PROCESS of Accounting (the forms, the numbers etc.), but what if you started talking about the RESULTS you help clients achieve?

Doubled someone’s tax return? That’s pretty sexy!

Saved a SME a massive tax bill? Tell me more!

Found someone a way to invest and get ahead that will cost them nothing? Great – don’t you think other people might know about that too?

helping clients make or save money
(maybe not this dramatic though… after all, you’re an Accountant, not Pablo Escobar)

If you can give value to people (clients or not), and show them a “desired result” then chances are, people would LOVE to hear about it.

Q2) How do I actually get Accounting clients from Social Media?

A2) That’s a GREAT question. After all, if you’re going to be investing in Social Media as a business or marketing tool, you would expect to get something back in the way of ROI right?

At it’s simplest level (without going into the technicality of running ads – which are awesome by the way), it’s all about giving value, and then making an offer.

If you show 10 SMEs one tax strategy that reduces their bill, chances are a couple of them will come back and ask you if you can do it for them.

Show them how they can do that, and then give them an offer to do it for them at x% off? You’ll get even more of them come back and come on board as actual clients.

Of course, this has to be done strategically but don’t overthink the process.

Q3) How often do I need to post?

A3) We recommend you post at least once a day.

According to some sources, after the 2nd post of the day, engagement and readership drops off and less than once a day means not enough people are seeing your posts.

If you don’t have the time to be posting every day, there are companies out there (like ours of course!) that takes care of it for you at a very affordable price.

Here’s an article from Hubbspot that talks more about posting frequency:

Q4) Do I have to create all the content?

A4) Definitely not.

In fact, if all the content came from you, it can actually have an adverse effect.

People like to see and learn from a diverse range of sources, and it actually makes you look good if you’re the one who recommends the content to them.

We like sharing articles, videos and sometimes even quotes/ pictures if the content is “right”.

Sharing makes you look good
Sharing is caring…. and makes you look good

Q5) How do I get more fans

A5) Who cares?

Marketers who focus on the number of “fans” a page has is one of my pet peeves.

Other companies like to sell “get more fans” like it’s a good thing, but the last time I checked – fans don’t pay the mortgage!

Me when people focus on “fans” as the most important metric

The way that the Facebook algorithm works, not all of your fans will see you posts anyway!

You should be asking is: “how do I get my message or offer seen by as many people as possible, and how do I get those people to stick their hands up and become a client?”

Quick answer to that question (without going into running more technical Ads on Facebook) is: boosting strategic posts or offers. The proper answer is that it’s different from firm to firm, depending on what services or products you offer, and who you serve.
